Road Accidents: 509 Killed In Ashanti Region In 2018


509 people in the Ashanti region lost their lives through road accidents from January to December 2018, representing 52% increase as compared to 334 recorded in 2017.

The year 2018 also recorded 3,000 people injured in road accidents, with a total of 2,700 reported accidents.

According to the Ashanti Regional branch of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), out of the total number killed, 369 people, including drivers and passengers died while the remaining 140 were pedestrians who were knocked down and killed my motor vehicles.

The statistics also showed that 3,900 vehicles that were involved in accidents, Asokore Division in the Effiduase District recorded the highest rate of 380 cases while Fomena Division in the Adansi North District had the least, with 6 cases.

The Officer in charge of Records at the MTTD, Ashanti, Sgt. Akpong Aiden briefing on the statistics said commercial vehicles were the major culprits with 2,000 cases, followed by the private vehicles with 1,500 and motor bikes/cycles recording 600 cases.

The year under review indicated the Region recorded higher rate of accidents with 2,733 than the year 2017 which had 2,289 cases, which claimed 334 lives.

Sgt. Aiden told’s Agya Sam “the increase rate of accidents in the region is alarming and the department needs to step up their effects to reduce it. 52% increment in deaths is disgusting and the Command will engage all the stakeholders to find solutions in curbing the situation.”
